“Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood” is the newest restaurant at WDW, located in Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. This restaurant lies on the 16th floor and boasts some breathtaking views of all 4 theme parks, Blizzard Beach Waterpark, and the rest of the Walt Disney World Resort.

The Ambiance

Toledo is a Spanish-style restaurant that mixes traditional and modern decor very well. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow guests to see Hollywood Studios wonderfully, including the firework show, and even glimpses of Epcot and Magic Kingdom. The ceiling in the center changes colors throughout the night to enhance the sunset as it happens.

The Food

Tapas

The only vegan tapas option was the “‘Aceitunas’ Marinated Olives” for $11. This is a sharing tapa. It consists of a warm plate of various olives with crushed red pepper and a plate of toast. My whole family was a little weirded out by the fact that the olives were warm. I, personally, thought this dish was fine, but it was definitely put to shame by the next dish.

Appetizer

The vegan appetizer was the “‘Pan con Tomate’ Tomato Bread” and it was DELICIOUS. I don’t even like tomatoes and I loved this dish. It is a bowl of crushed tomato, garlic, and olive oil served with a plate of garlic bread. The crushed tomato tasted very much like salsa. 10/10 recommend.

Entree

I was very excited for this vegan entree option: “Plant-based Seafood”. I have tried plant-based seafood before but it was banana blossom, and I knew this was more mushroom-based, so I was ready for something new. The “scallops” were made of the stems of a mushroom. The texture was awful, like so bad, and I love mushrooms. Next I tried the “calamari”, which was also mushroom, this time breaded. This was the only part of the dish I actually finished. I asked the waitress for any type of sauce because they were dry. She brought out barbecue sauce for my seafood (face palm). Whatever, I used it, it’s fine.

The next part is what really threw me off: the couscous. Now, don’t get me wrong I love couscous, but I am not a flavor mixing person. This couscous was citrus-flavored, as in it had mandarin oranges on top. Not a fan. I did pick through the vegetables and eat the mushrooms that were mixed in.

The last part of this dish was the “crab” cake. At first I really liked it, but as I ate it, I realized it had gotten more and more salty. I asked my brother to try it and he described it as “Someone took a big Kosher canister of salt and dumped it on”. I let the waitress know so that she could tell the chef and maybe it can be fixed. Although the seasoning wasn’t the greatest, the texture of this cake was spot on, just like a real crab-cake. So it wasn’t all bad. On the side of the dish, there was also a splatter of sauce, but I thought it was too spicy for this dish.

Dessert

Toledo is totally SLAYING THE GAME when it comes to dessert. The vegan dessert option was “Chocolate-Avocado Mousse”. It. Was. So. Good. This dish was plated so beautifully. It came with a side of strawberry basil sorbet, which sounds weird but it was actually really refreshing. The mousse was surrounded by graham cracker crumbles and blueberries. There was just enough of every element of this dish for each bite to have everything. The flavors went together so incredibly well. 10/10 recommend, even for non-vegans.

Overview

In all honesty, I do not see myself returning to Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood any time soon. The atmosphere was great, but the vegan options were not, the waitress had no idea what on the menu was vegan, and even told me the allergy menu wouldn’t help me. She tried her best, but was very uneducated on special diets. It was a good thing I had done my research prior to arriving to the meal. Disney claims that this new restaurant rivals “California Grill” at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, but the views were NOTHING compared to what you would get at Cali Grill.

My dad and brother, who are non-vegans, enjoyed their meal. However, my brother doesn’t eat seafood or red meat, so he only had one entree option: Wine-Braised Chicken. They both said they would go back to this restaurant.

All in all, for non-vegans, and especially seafood lovers, this would be a great dining experience. The restaurant is beautiful, the views are wonderful, and the menu seems pretty great. However, for a vegan, this restaurant is a little disappointing. Only having one option for each course of a meal makes you feel like you’re being punished for having a special diet. Thank you Disney for having vegan dishes in the first place, but it would be nice to have options.
